Puddle jumping boots + a quick dry dress for a rainy day – Summer 2017 10×10 Wardrobe Challenge Day 5

Summer 10x10 Dress+SoupTee3

Summer 10x10 Dress+SoupTee5

It’s day 5 of the Summer 2017 Wardrobe Challenge, which means it’s halfway through the challenge!

Here it’s been a cool rainy Summer day. I’ve spent most of the day hunkered down, enjoying the rain at a distance and through a window – so, I did ditch the sunglasses and darken the lip. It’s not quite as summery, but feels perfect for a rainy day in, so I went with it.

Ever since I got this dress, I’ve loved wearing it with heeled boots in the rain. The fabric in the dress is polyester so it dries quickly, and it doesn’t feel heavy when the hem gets wet. And the boots combine the comfort of leather boots with enough of a rubber platform and heel for puddle jumping.

Combining these boots and dress makes the base of a fantastic rainy day outfit. Add to that an easy tee shirt, and it’s good to go.

I’ll be taking the weekend off from outfit posts, and be back on Monday with the 6th look. I have tentative plans pull together a quick post about all the pieces in my mini-capsule wardrobe, but it’s entirely probable that waffles and sunshine will win out over writing, so that post might have to wait till after this challenge is finished.

An outfit that’s not *actually* an outfit – Summer 2017 10×10 Wardrobe Challenge Day 4

Summer 10x10 Jeans+PowerTee4

Summer 10x10 Jeans+PowerTee3

Summer 10x10 Jeans+PowerTee2

It’s Day 4 of the Summer 2017 10×10 Wardrobe Challenge, and the first day of repeats!

Both this tee shirt and these jeans are making their second appearance in this challenge. Last time I wore this tee it was over a summery maxi dress, and the last time I wore these jeans they were paired with a made-by-me button up shirt.

When I built this 10 piece wardrobe, I wanted to use this mini-capsule wardrobe to experiment with tee-shirts and sunglasses. With that in mind I included 4 shirts, 1 skirt, 1 pair of jeans, 2 dresses, and 2 pairs of shoes (and if I’m being honest with myself, one of those dresses is a “just in case I need something other than tee shirts” dress.)

I’ve never been a huge wearer of tee shirts (at least, not since I started buying my own clothing).

Most of the time I find that tee shirts just don’t quite fit correctly. I often find that they are a little too short, or the neckline is a little too high, or the sleeves are just a smidge too tight. More often than not I find myself cutting off the cuffs, or collars, or hems, cutting a whole new neck, remaking a whole new shirt, or some other combination of alterations.

But I have to say, when I find a tee that works, there’s nothing quite like the clean silhouette of a tee shirt that hasn’t met a pair of scissors. Especially, when the tee is matched by a pair of jeans, some sneakers, sunglasses, and a lip to pull the look together.

It’s a look that’s not actually a look, an outfit that’s not actually an outfit, and has a feeling of effortless because it actually took zero effort – the perfect non-outfit outfit for a random muggy Thursday in July.

It was pretty disgustingly hot, and humid today, so a loose breezy outfit was perfect.

This skirt is one of those seemingly magical pieces of clothing. It works with almost anything, and in almost any situation. It feels wonderful every time you wear it, and gets complimented nearly as often.

I made it about three years ago, worn it well over 100 times, and have never gotten sick of it.

Every time I pull this skirt out, after awhile of not having it be front and center in my closet every day, I wonder what elements make it work so well. What conjures the magic in a magical piece of clothing?

I can never 100% pin down (or plan) what makes a seemingly perfect garment perfect. But that doesn’t mean I don’t try, and for this piece, I think at least part of part of the magic comes from how this piece strikes a balance between juxtaposing qualities.

It’s a silk skirt, so there is an element of “dressy,” but it has an elastic waistband, which makes it feel very casual. It’s a pretty basic ivory color but since it has the subtle pattern it can’t quite be pigeonholed into the category of “solid basic skirt.” The handkerchief hem again plays into the casual nature of it, but having two off-set layers makes it something a little more interesting than a straightforward 4-corner handkerchief hem. The geometric check pattern is subtle enough to be subdued, but interesting enough to be eye-catching.

So, paired with a simple black tee-shirt, my go-to jewelry, and some sneakers, this is the sort of skirt that makes for the perfect centerpiece of a low key, easy breezy, hot-humid, summer day look.

It’s day two of the Summer 2017 10×10 Wardrobe Challenge! And I’m absolutely loving having a very limited wardrobe again. My everyday wardrobe is by no means bloated, and yet, I usually have no idea what I want to wear at least once a week.

I’ve observed that for me at least, “I have nothing to wear” is code for a combination of “I have nothing to wear that represents who I want to be today” (which is never actually factually true, but always feels true at the time) and “there are too many options, I’m overwhelmed.”

This 10 piece wardrobe is just so easy to choose from in the morning – all the options are there, just choose the one that works.

I’m loving this look today because it’s casual and effortless without looking shlubby. It’s comfortable enough to wear sitting on the computer all day, but put-together enough that I don’t feel the need to change to run errands. When you work from home, it’s really easy to spend the majority of your day at work in your pjs, or comfy “at home” clothing. But for me (and I’m sure for a ton of other people who work from home) switching out of “work” mode at the end of the day is difficult enough because the location that work happens in is the same location that non-work happens in. Add on top of working and relaxing in the same location, working and relaxing in the same clothing and there is no way that I will ever even come close to successfully switching out of “work mode.”

Work-life balance, what work-life balance?

So, I do always appreciate an outfit that is put together enough to be an outfit, and relaxed enough to be worn at a desk at home.

It has been about two years since the last time I did a wardrobe challenge. I had been intending to use July to focus on Who Wears Who? And so when Caroline of Un-Fancy, and Lee of Style Bee announced that their Summer 10×10 Wardrobe Challenge would be starting the second week of the month, I decided to combine the two – jump start the blog, and partake in this round of the 10×10 wardrobe challenge.

The basic premise of the 10×10 Wardrobe Challenge is: 10 pieces of clothing, 10 looks, 10 days.

It’s like the world’s most low-key capsule wardrobe. And a deliciously simple way to get your feet wet with wardrobe minimalism (or style blogging…).

My 10 piece wardrobe consists of 4 shirts, 1 skirt, 1 pair of jeans, 2 dresses, and 2 pairs of shoes. (Shoes count towards the 10 pieces, but accessories, pjs, undergarments, and purpose specific pieces (i.e. gym wear) don’t count.)

I’m using this mini-capsule wardrobe to experiment with tee-shirts and sunglasses. I’ve never been a huge wearer of either, so I’m excited to play around with both.

With today being Monday, and the first day of the challenge, I went with an easy dress, an easy tee, comfy boots, easy accessories, and a bold lip.
